Fabric Weight Guide: How to Choose Upholstery GSM
GSM means grams per square meter: the mass of fabric divided by its area. For upholstery sourcing, put the target GSM beside the construction, usable width and application on your inquiry. Treat it as a weight specification. It does not establish an abrasion rating, fire classification or a guarantee that the fabric will suit a particular piece of furniture.
What does GSM fabric weight mean?
A value of 260 GSM means 260 grams for one square meter of the stated fabric. It does not mean 260 grams per running meter, because a running meter's area also depends on the fabric width. When discussing weight, identify the material being measured and whether a backing or other layer is included. Ask for clarification if the product description and quotation appear to refer to different versions of the fabric.
The calculation is mass in grams divided by area in square meters. For a simple illustration, a 10 by 10 centimeter specimen has an area of 0.01 square meter. If that specimen weighs 2.6 grams, the calculated value is 260 GSM. This example explains the unit; it is not a laboratory procedure or a measured result for a Haida product.
How should a weight result be checked?
For an order specification, agree the measurement method, sampling and tolerance with the supplier. The public description of ASTM D3776/D3776M covers fabric mass per unit area and distinguishes several sampling options. A small-swatch result describes that sample and does not necessarily establish the value for an entire lot. Use the agreed procedure when deciding whether supplied material meets the order.
Keep the sample reference with the result and identify any uncertainty before using it in a quotation comparison. An estimate made from a small offcut may be useful for an initial discussion, but it should be labeled as an estimate. Do not convert a rough measurement into an agreed production tolerance. If consistency across a shipment is important, discuss how sampling and acceptance will be handled before the purchase order is finalized.

How can a published product weight help?

This helps distinguish an exact replacement request from a search for alternatives. The supplier can review the brief and discuss the offered quality; your team can then compare the sample with the intended finished item.
Does higher GSM mean better upholstery performance?
GSM alone does not answer that question. It measures mass per area, while an upholstery brief may also require a particular appearance, handling, strength or abrasion result. Compare the selected material against those requirements separately. If a wear result is needed, request the relevant report and check the fabric, finish and test method it covers. There is no abrasion result supplied by the GSM calculation itself.
For the same reason, weight does not prove fire performance. Specify the required standard and ask what evidence is available for the chosen quality. Keep performance documents with the fabric reference, rather than assuming that a result for one item applies to every similar-looking material. This makes the purchasing record easier to review when a customer asks which evidence supports a requirement.

What GSM should I choose for a sofa?
Start with the intended component and a useful reference sample. If you already have a target, identify it as a requested specification. Compare the offered samples through your normal assembly and approval process, then agree the weight and other acceptance requirements for the selected quality.
Can GSM tell me the cutting yield?
GSM does not define the cutting layout. Supply the usable width, pattern pieces and any orientation requirements when discussing material use. Keep the weight field and the cutting calculation separate so neither is mistaken for the other.
What quantity should I include in the request?
State quantity per color. Haida's standard upholstery starts at 1200 meters per color; higher weights, special finishes, apparel and available stock are confirmed separately. Ask for the terms applicable to the selected fabric rather than applying that starting quantity to every item.
