What Is Warp Knit Fabric? A Guide for Upholstery Buyers
Warp-knit fabric is made with yarns forming loops along the length of the fabric. For an upholstery buyer, the construction name is a starting point: the selected fabric still needs the right surface, weight, usable width and handling for the furniture being made. Begin with a reference sample and the intended application, then compare the actual qualities offered for that brief.
What does warp knitting describe?
Warp knitting describes how yarns form the knitted structure. It does not, by itself, identify the fiber composition, pile appearance, coating or finished weight. Cotton Incorporated's CottonWorks knit basics explains the difference between warp and weft loop formation. Those construction terms help you ask the supplier a precise question, but they cannot replace the specification for the particular fabric you intend to purchase.
Keep construction and appearance in separate fields on your inquiry. A name such as velvet describes a surface family, while the construction field describes the underlying textile structure. If a reference photograph shows the look you want but you do not know the structure, say so. Send a sample when available and ask which construction the quoted quality uses. A product name alone may leave that question unanswered.

Which specifications belong on an upholstery brief?
Describe the finished item before choosing a fabric. A sofa seat, loose cushion, curved arm and decorative panel can create different cutting and assembly requirements. Include the application, reference and expected order quantity in your first message. Then agree which details are essential and which can be adjusted after sampling. This gives the supplier a useful basis for proposing a quality instead of guessing from a broad category name.
| Field | What to send | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Furniture type and panel location | Sample suitability for your assembly |
| Appearance | Reference swatch, color and surface preference | Face direction and acceptable variation |
| Construction | Known structure or a request for identification | Construction of the quoted quality |
| Weight and width | Target GSM and usable width | Offered values and agreed tolerances |
| Performance | Required test method and acceptance criterion | Report coverage for the selected fabric |
| Order | Quantity per color and destination | Minimum, timing and quotation terms |
How should you compare samples?
Label each sample with the supplier reference and specification. Compare the face and reverse, check the preferred orientation, and ask your production team to trial the material using the intended panel and seam. Record what you observe: appearance around a curve, handling during cutting and the result after assembly. These observations belong to that sample and trial; they should not become a general performance claim about every warp-knit fabric.
If two samples look similar, compare their specification sheets before deciding they are interchangeable. Ask about composition, finish, width and weight. Keep the approved sample with the purchase records so later discussions refer to the same material. When the order includes several colors, identify the color references separately and confirm how color approval will be handled. A photograph can start the conversation, but it does not settle every detail visible on a physical sample.

Does warp-knit construction guarantee durability?
No construction label establishes an abrasion result or a fire-performance classification for a specific upholstery fabric. If your project requires a particular test, provide the method and acceptance requirement in the inquiry. Request documentation that identifies the selected quality and relevant finish. Check the material covered by the report before using its result in your own product specification or making a promise to a furniture customer.
Apply the same approach to weight. GSM expresses mass per unit area; it is not an abrasion score. A heavier sample may feel different in the hand, but the weight alone does not answer whether it meets your project requirement. The upholstery GSM guide explains how to put weight on a sourcing brief without treating it as a test result.
Questions before a first order
Can I choose from a photo?
A photo is useful for discussing color and surface direction. Add the intended use and any known specification, then request a sample review before confirming a quality. If the image belongs to an existing item, indicate which features matter most so alternatives can be compared against the same brief.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Haida's standard upholstery starting quantity is 1200 meters per color. Apparel, higher weights, special finishes and stock availability are confirmed separately. Include quantity per color in the inquiry and ask for the terms that apply to the selected fabric.
Can I request certification or test documents?
Include the required document or standard, fabric reference and intended use. Certification documents are available on request after inquiry, with the applicable scope confirmed for the selected fabric. Availability of a document is not a blanket certification claim for the whole catalog.
Start with a defined fabric request
Browse the velvet upholstery collection for references or discuss custom warp-knit requirements. Send your application, sample or product link, target weight, usable width, color and quantity per color. Add any required tests and your destination. Use request quote and samples to prepare the details, then Request With WhatsApp for review of the selected quality.
